The Verdict
Injectable semaglutide (Ozempic/Wegovy) produces roughly twice the weight loss of oral semaglutide (Rybelsus) — ~15% vs ~5-8%. The oral form is ideal for patients who cannot tolerate injections, but the injectable form is far superior for weight loss. A higher-dose oral semaglutide (25mg and 50mg) is in development and may close this gap.
PIONEER studies tested oral doses up to 14mg. Higher oral doses (25mg, 50mg) showed weight loss closer to injectable in Phase 3 trials.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Rybelsus as effective as Ozempic for weight loss?
No. Rybelsus at its current max dose (14mg) produces about 5-8% weight loss, while injectable Ozempic/Wegovy produces 10-17%. The oral form has lower bioavailability.
Can I take Rybelsus instead of injecting Ozempic?
Yes, but expect less weight loss. Rybelsus requires strict fasting (take on empty stomach with max 4oz water, wait 30 minutes before eating). Discuss the trade-offs with your doctor.
Is a higher-dose oral semaglutide coming?
Yes. Novo Nordisk has developed oral semaglutide at 25mg and 50mg doses, which showed weight loss much closer to injectable versions in clinical trials. FDA approval is expected.
